Description: ‘Extempore means the art of speaking on a given topic at the spur of the moment’. On the occasion of English Literary week, the English Extempore competition for the students of class X was held on 6th July, 2023 by the organising committee headed by Dr.Punam Gupta. The judges of the competition were- Fr. Cebin Mathew, S.J. who is a Jesuit Priest and a member of St. Xavier’s School Community and is also a young practicing lawyer at Patna High Court. Our next judge was Mr.Paritosh Kumar who is a Science teacher in St. Mary’s School who is efficient and well versed in all subjects, including English language. Next was Mr.Abhijeet Prakash who has done Ph.D. in English Literature and has been teaching language in literature in Don Bosco Academy, DighaGhat, Patna for the past 10 years.
The competition started with the Bihar Board Students with 8 participants and then came the turn of the ICSE students with twelve participants. Each student was given a topic. They were given one hour to prepare on the topic and the time allotted to each student to speak was three minutes. At the end of two and a half minutes a warning bell was rung and at the end of three minutes the final bell was sounded. Some of the topics were ‘Music heals the wound’, ‘Yoga gives internal strength and happiness’, ‘Sweet are the uses of adversity’, ‘Newspapers are the world's mirror’,‘Impact of online education’ etc...It was not so easy for the students. Some were fearful while others had stage fright. But they tried their best. At the end of the competition words of wisdom was shared by the judges, Mr.Abhijeet Prakash and Mr.Paritosh Kumar. Finally, at the end of the competition the winners were awarded by our principal Fr. Dominic K.P. and one of our judges Fr. Cebin Mathew. Such competitions help building the skill of speaking and communication in students.
