Description: The three day English literary activity was conducted in our school. It started with storytelling competition for class VI and elocution for class VII on the first day and declamation and debate competition on 28th June 2024, the second day. A good speech is like a pencil; it has to have a point. Declamation is an act of speaking to an audience. It is recitation of a speech from memory with studied gestures and intonation as an exercise in elocution or rhetoric. There were eight participants from Bihar Board and twelve from ICSE from class eight who took part in it. They delivered the famous speeches of the renowned personalities like Selena Gomez, Malala Yousafzai, Aung San Suu Kyi, Muniba Mazari and many more. They dressed themselves as the persona they were representing. It added more life and appeal to their speeches. It was a tough competition as they had to memorise the speech and then speak for three minutes. Such a delivery of speeches bring confidence, builds power of oration and helps them explore more about the famous personalities.
In the second round a debate competition was conducted for the students of class IX. The topic for debate for Bihar Board was ‘Online shopping is better than offline shopping’ and the topic for ICSE was ‘Our forefathers led a more scientific way of life than us.’ Eight participants from Bihar Board, two constituting a team, one speaking for and the other against the motion took part in it. Twelve participants took part from ICSE. The time limit was three minutes. They very well argued that online shopping saves time, energy, money and gives us variety of options along with many discounts and offers. On the other hand it was agued by the opponents that the delivery of items takes time, quality of product may not match the real one, it has affected the shops and business.
The students spoke how our forefathers woke up at brahmamuhurat, 3 to 5 a.m. to reap the benefits of fresh, cool air, warmed themselves in the rays of sun, ate coarse food lie millets, did physical activities which was a scientific way to be healthy and happy. In contrast the modern generation feeds on pizza, burger, food items made of refined flour. On the other hand the opponents argued that we are more scientific as we use gadgets, equipments, take help of AI (artificial intelligence), mobile phones etc. It was really a tough battle to win. It was their hard work, exploration, research work, memorisation which helped them argue and put forward their stand. The difficult task of judging the speakers was done by Mrs. SagarikaSenguptaMukherji, a teacher of English from St. Joseph’s Convent High School, Jethuli, Patna, Professor Ajay Kumar from St. St. Xavier’s College of Management and Technology, Patna and Ms. Kumud Henry, coordinator of High school wing of our school.
